Certificate of Advanced Study in Alternative Dispute Resolution
A speciality of Organizational and Professional CommunicationConflict is a natural by-product of human interaction, occurring in all types of organizations, every kind of society known to man, and in families around the globe. Although conflict situations are not inherently bad, the potential costs of poorly managed conflict are certain and include elevated stress, violence, diminished creativity, mistrust, and decreased productivity - just to name a few.
In contrast to the use of power, litigation, aggression, or any other forum in which one party's inherent advantages preclude a fair resolution of a conflict situation, alternative dispute resolution (ADR) is a universal term used to describe less costly means to resolving conflicts. ADR methods are applied to resolve conflicts between individuals, organizations, small groups, and nations and may involve the practice of mediation, negotiation, facilitation,
or arbitration.
The University of Denver's Certificate of Advanced Study in ADR offers a unique and comprehensive approach to the study of conflict analysis and resolution. It recognizes the potential destructive nature of conflict, as well as its constructive and transformational potential. Building on an examination of relevant theories, the program provides students with opportunities to acquire and develop the requisite knowledge and skills to succeed as a dispute
resolution professional. The program is designed for individuals new to the field, as well as for professionals who want to enhance current capabilities and services in their chosen field.
The ADR program prepares students to:
