Presented by the University of Denver’s Enrichment Program, America in the World, 2021 and Beyond: Post-Election Roundtable, December 1, will feature former U.S. Ambassador Gary Grappo and Special Guests Sam Zhao and Lewis Griffith.

What’s next? Contentious and unsettling; these are two words that hover heavily over the results of the presidential elections, especially as we consider America’s role in the world going forward.

A quick glance in America’s rearview mirror from the last four years might help. It represented a tectonic shift—one with a sharp turn inward and a focus on anti-multilateralism and “America First.”

In an era of so-called great power competition, should the U.S. continue to focus on its own interests, though perhaps with a softer touch? Can we—or should we—return working with traditional allies? Are our alliances with NATO or with historic partners like Japan, South Korea and Australia still in our national interests? What about our memberships in the United Nations, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organization, the World Health Organization—can we still play a leadership role in them going forward?

On December 1, join a distinguished panel of international policy experts, including Gary Grappo, who holds nearly 40 years of diplomatic and public policy experience; Sam Zhao, director of the Center for China-U.S. Cooperation at Josef Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver; and Lewis Griffith, a security policies analyst who’s published extensively on weapons proliferation and humanitarian intervention, as they offer penetrating insights into these questions, as well as examine America’s position on climate change, cybersecurity, and relations with China, Russia, Iran and North Korea.

Importantly, the panel will tackle that all-important question: What’s next—what we should expect in the coming four years?
