The year is wrapping up and now is a great time to reflect and set professional goals for the next year. What did you want to achieve this year that you did not? Are you looking to make a career move? Do you want to learn more skills? Here are steps to help you make 2018 the year to advance your career and achieve your goals.
1. Map Out Your Goals
Brainstorm what you want to accomplish in the next year. Do you want to learn new skills? Expand your network? Are you looking to get a new job? Where do you see yourself this time next year? Map it out!
2. Research
Determine the tools you will need to reach your goals. If you want to gain new knowledge, look at professional development courses offered through the Center for Professional Development. Maybe you want to gain new skills for your job by getting a graduate certificate. If you are looking to expand your network, join professional organizations or join the University College Alumni Network (UCAN) Meetup Group if you’re a University College alumnus. Research your options and find the right fit for you.
2. Create a Timeline
Set a timeline for the year so you can be on pace to achieve your goals. How many job applications do you want to send out each week? How many networking events do you want to attend monthly? Will you be making appointments at the Career Center? How many classes do you plan on taking this year? Developing a timeline will help you stay on track and reach milestones through the year.
4. Stick with the Plan
Sticking with new habits can be hard. According to Glassdoor, 80% of New Year’s resolutions fail to make it to March. Do your best not to change your timeline and don’t let bumps in the road derail your journey. Stay organized by using a planner and setting reminders.
4. Celebrate Achievements
Give yourself credit and celebrate your achievements along the way. If you learned new skills for your current job, don’t be afraid to ask for a raise! Post your new credentials on your resume and your LinkedIn profile. Share your accomplishments with family and friends!
