Bio

Ann Makikalli is a longtime educator with 25+ years of experience in higher education and professional language training. She has a deep understanding of curriculum development, theories of adult learning and instructional design.

Education

Ann earned her BFA in Film Writing from the University of Southern California, M.A. in TESOL from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey, and Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Denver.

Professional Background

Ann has taught classes in English language, culture and communication to undergraduate, graduate and working professionals in the United States, Japan and Finland. As a professor, curriculum designer, faculty mentor and interim assistant director, Ann has a wide breadth of experience including programming development and delivery, design and implementation of student and curriculum assessment, unit administration, upholding academic standards and working collaboratively with campus networks and resources.

Motivation for Teaching

Ann implements Universal Design for Learning principles throughout courses. This means developing a flexible learning environment, presenting information in multiple modalities and providing options for demonstrating learning ˗ so students can engage in courses in a variety of ways.
