Bio

Derek Duncan has more than 35 years of experience working with the military, defense industrial bases and Department of Defense organizations and possesses a diverse background encompassing Information Technology, Telecommunications Management, Contingency Contracting and Security Management. His professional background has provided him with a deep and broad understanding of security requirements across a wide range of disciplines and environments.

Derek currently serves as the Activity Security Manager for a U.S. Navy field activity with overall responsibility for the development and administration of security programs that include physical security programs that protect personnel, information, property, information and industrial security programs that safeguard sensitive information; and personnel security programs that assess personnel for assignment to sensitive duties.

In his assignments as a Security Manager, Derek has implemented numerous reforms in how those programs are administered by utilizing IT assets and services to streamline workforce-oriented security requirements as well as evaluating and updating business operations and contracting practices that significantly improved overall security program performance.

Education

Derek earned a BGS from Indiana University and an MS in Enterprise Risk Management from Boston University.

Derek utilizes his knowledge and experience to teach his students security best practices, as they relate to a broad range of topics, based on academic learning and a real-world perspective. He is readily available via email and virtual office hours to answer questions, provide guidance, and offer insights from a security perspective.
