Eric Smith
Bio
Eric Smith is an innovative leader with more than 20 years of experience in law enforcement and security leadership. His focus has been on developing and improving technology and strategic planning to enhance security programs as a business function.
Education
Eric holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration / International Business from the University of Colorado in Boulder. He is a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) through ASIS International and completed the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training program.
Professional Background
Eric currently is the owner and founder of Business Karate LLC and is passionate about helping organizations navigate the unique challenges that businesses face in today’s increasingly complex and dangerous threat landscape.
He has also been in healthcare security at various organizations and has been involved in the design and rollout of security for a new hospital, as well as revamping several security programs and winning back support. He was able to spearhead a new strategic vision for a safety net, urban hospital and implement new systems to monitor and respond to threats.
Eric spent more than a decade in law enforcement at the Boulder Police Department, including serving as a firearms instructor, police driving instructor and FTO. He also served on a special team focused on street-level drug crimes.
He has authored numerous articles on law enforcement and security, contributed to several books and has authored two books of his own, including Workplace Security Essentials. Eric has been very involved in the industry, serving in various capacities with both ASIS International and IAHSS.
Motivation for Teaching
Eric is enthusiastic about connecting the security industry and business principles and seeks to help the future security leaders be successful in both the security and business realms.

Eric takes a practical approach and teaches his students to look at the full impact of security decisions on the entire organization using real-life examples and hard-won experience as a guide.
