Steps to Prepare for Your University College Classes

There’s a certain mix of excitement and nerves that collide before a new class begins. We know the feeling! Be empowered to take on your coursework with confidence by reviewing these steps for success as you prepare for class.

 

1. Register as a new student
Starting at University College as a new student? If you have already applied and been admitted to University College and want to take a course as a new student.

Non-Degree Registration Request Form

If you haven’t applied or been admitted and want to take a course (whether you plan to apply or not), complete this form up until the first day of the quarter to enroll before you apply. The credits you earn may be applied to a certificate or master’s degree once admitted. Please have your documentation ready when submitting the form (for graduate programs, include transcript or proof of bachelor’s degree and for non-native speakers, include proof of English proficiency).

2. Review important dates and deadlines
Know what important dates and deadlines are coming up for current students.

3. Register for courses
Choose a course that fits your interests and your schedule. New courses are typically published one month prior to registration for the next term.

4. Purchase course materials and complete pre-class assignments
Once you’ve registered for courses, textbooks can be purchased through the DU Bookstore. Also be sure to review any pre-class assignments—with accelerated 10-week classes, we hit the ground running!

5. Build confidence in writing and formatting
Brush up on your writing fundamentals and learn about Turabian style formatting through the Welcome and Writing Resources Overview online writing workshop held quarterly, or access the online Writing Resource Guide at any time. Open Write Nights are held each quarter as well, giving you the opportunity for online drop-in writing support.

6. Complete the Student Success Course
All new University College students must complete the University College Student Success Course during their first quarter (no tuition or fees associated with this required course). You will have access to this course via Canvas, the learning management system used at University College, a few days after you have been registered. Want to get started early? You may start viewing content in the course via Canvas, though please note access to uploading content such as assignments and quizzes will not be available until after registration.
